Why Self-Care Is Essential For Us As Climate Activists

Practicing self-care is vital if you care about the planet. In fact, the more engaged you are with climate change, the more you need to take this to heart.

Eco-aware people often forgo convenience in favor of sustainability. Nothing takes more of our energy, though, than simply being aware of the facts of climate change. What we read and watch and hear can be overwhelming.

In fact, mental health specialists now recognize climate anxiety as a legitimate response to the reality of climate change. How can we remain engaged without giving in to despair? One way is to practice self-care.

Self-Care is Essential

It’s not selfish to take care of yourself. It’s especially important to practice self-care in these current times. You can’t be effective if you’re running on empty.

Some people need to retreat to a quiet place to recharge their batteries. Others need to reach out and spend time with others. Tune into yourself and find out what you need most. Do something every day—or at least every couple of days—to replenish yourself.

Take a Media Break

Sure, it’s important to be informed about what’s happening in the world. It’s okay, though, to take a step back from the news cycle. Turn off the TV, mute notifications, kick social media to the curb. Do it for a day or an afternoon. You’ll be amazed at how much better you feel when you turn off the screens.

Eat Healthy Foods

Stress takes a toll on our bodies. When we’re stressed it’s especially hard to eat well. We start to think that having a bag of chips or ice cream for dinner is a good idea. That only leaves us feeling even more depleted.

What your body really needs is nutrient-dense food. You don’t have to cook an elaborate meal to eat healthy foods. Slice an apple and pair it with a scoop of nut butter and/or chocolate. Grab some plain yogurt and add fruit, nuts, and a Truffle Thin square. Real nutrition will make you feel better, replenish your energy, and keep your body healthy.

Take a Nap

If you feel like everything is just too much, a nap may be in order. We live in a go-go-go culture that prizes burning the midnight oil. Burning the midnight oil isn’t going to keep you strong, rested, and able to respond well to life’s challenges—including climate change. Eat well, get enough rest, and take a nap when needed. We hereby grant you permission to grab some extra zzz’s.

Remember to Make Time for Joy

Joy is an energetic powerhouse. Think about the last time you felt joyful. Were you sleepy or sluggish? Of course not! Joy makes our heartbeat a little faster (like a mini-cardio workout), boosts immunity, and reduces stress. Think about what makes you joyful. Seeing friends, tossing a frisbee, making model airplanes, playing music. Whatever it is, make time for it. You’re worth it.

Remember the world needs us at our best. Do whatever it takes to bring your best self to the table.

How will you practice self-care today?
