Alter Eco Americas, Inc. is voluntarily recalling three lots of its Deep Dark Blackout Organic Chocolate bar in New York state only out of an abundance of caution because it may contain undeclared milk allergen that exceeds New York state limits. Only those consumers who are allergic or have a severe sensitivity to milk allergen may run the risk of serious allergic reactions if they consume this product. The product does have a precautionary allergen statement on the packaging already saying that the product is made on equipment shared with milk. “After a raft of negative reports on labor conditions in cocoa production, Mars, Hershey and other large chocolate makers have committed to bring their practices more into line with Alter Eco’s.”
“The sublime flavors in Alter Eco’s latest bars have also been shown to improve your outlook on life – at least according to our unofficial office research. The Salted Almonds bar is as rich and deeply nutty as you’d hope; Salt & Malt offers a toasty, crispy taste of nostalgia; and Super Blackout is an intense but not-too-bitter bar for cocoa heads. Even better: The organic, fair-trade brand sources from small-scale, farmer-owned cooperatives.”
Our dietitians were on the lookout for a dark chocolate bar that's at least 65% cacao, made without any hydrogenated oils or trans fats. This 70% cacao bar fit the bill, and we love that a sprinkle of sea salt (fleur de sel de Guérande, to be exact) brings out its natural sweetness. We also love that this chocolate bar is made with 100% fair trade-certified ingredients.
